Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Ectocarpus is Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hummia onusta (Kützing) J.Fiore.

Source of Synonymy
Fiore, J. (1975). A new generic name for Farlowiella onusta (Phaeophyta). Taxon 24: 497-498, no figs.

Type Information
Type locality: "Ad Galveston (Texas)" [USA]; (Kützing 1849: 547) Notes: Fiore (1975: 497) remarked "Though the type of Ectocarpus onustus was lost during World War II, Kuckuck's accurate illustrations of plants from the type specimen leave no doubt as to the identity of the species. Kuckuck's illustrations are more accurate than those of Kiitzing (1855) and are designated as the neotype of the species.". The type material is surely in Kützing's herbarium at L and the neotypification may be superfluous.
