The type species (holotype) of the genus Ulva is Ulva lactuca Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Saccharina latissima (Linnaeus) C.E.Lane, C.Mayes, Druehl & G.W.Saunders.

Nomenclatural note
The name Ulva latissima L. has traditionally been misapplied to representative of the genus Ulva with very broad, sheet-like fronds. The type is a kelp (see Silva, 1952: 295; Papenfuss, 1960: 303), now referred to Saccharina latissima, q.v. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
