The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterothamnion spinescens (Strömfelt) Athanasiadis.

Noun (Latin), diminutive of "pluma", a wing; plumule (Brown 1946).
