The type species (holotype) of the genus Platythamnion is Platythamnion heteromorphum (J.Agardh) J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterothamnion pectinatum (Kylin) Athanasiadis & Kraft.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), pectinate, with narrow close-set divisions like a comb (Stearn 1983).
