Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Platythamnion is Platythamnion heteromorphum (J.Agardh) J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterothamnion villosum (Kylin) Athanasiadis & Kraft.

Adjective (Latin), villous, shaggy with farily long soft straight not interwoven ascending hairs (Stearn 1983).
