The type species (holotype) of the genus Phyllotylus is Phyllotylus membranifolius (Goodenough & Woodward) Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trematocarpus flabellatus (J.Agardh) De Toni.

Type locality: Cape of Good Hope, South Africa (Sea Point, Cape Town); (Silva & al. 1996: 321) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Simons (1983: 807, fig. 11).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), flabellate, fan-shaped (Stearn 1983).
