The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kapraunia schneideri (Stuercke & Freshwater) Savoie & G.W.Saunders.

Kapraun; 30 November 1973; growing on floating dock; MICH; [=WNC-8782] (Stuercke & Freshwater 2010: 302) Notes: Holotype: 3 specimens (male, female and tetrasporophyte) mounted on sheet.
