The type species (lectotype) of the genus Galaxaura is Galaxaura rugosa (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dichotomaria elegans (Tak.Tanaka) S.Fontana, W.-L.Wang & S.- L.Liu.
