The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polykrikos geminatus (F.Schütt) D.X.Qiu & Senjie Lin.
