Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Bryocladia cervicornis (Kützing) F.Schmitz.

Type locality: "Java: Zollinger. No. 2380" [Java, Indonesia (Malang province)]; (Kützing 1847: 776) Notes: The more precise type locality is according to G. Martens (1868: 99).
