The type species (lectotype) of the genus Rytiphlaea is Rytiphlaea purpurea C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kuetzingia canaliculata (Greville) Sonder.

Adjective (Latin), canaliculate, with a longitudinal channel or groove (Stearn 1983).
