This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Spongocladia.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cladophoropsis vaucheriiformis (Areschoug) Papenfuss.

Type Information
Type locality: Mauritius; (Silva & al. 1996: 797) Lectotype: Areschoug or Pike; S; A2572 (Leliaert & Coppejans 2006: 668) Notes: Syntypes: Mauritius, S A2569, A2570 & A2571. Several specimens from Mauritius are present in S; one of these labeled 'Spongocladia vaucheriaeformis Aresch. Ad litora insula Mauritius, dedit Areschoug' from the Areschoug herbarium, is indicated as lectotype by Leliaert & Coppejans (2006: 668).

Taxonomic note
According to Silva et al. (1996) the name Struvea delicatula has been misapplied to this species by Weber-van Bosse (1890: 85-92, pl. XVI: figs. 3-5; pl. XVII: figs. 1,2), De Wildeman (1897a: 21) and Phang & Wee (1991: 56). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
