The type species (holotype) of the genus Ulva is Ulva lactuca Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyosphaeria cavernosa (Forsskål) Børgesen.

Børgesen, F. (1932). A revision of Forsskål's algae mentioned in Flora Aegyptiaco-Arabica and found in his herbarium in the Botanical Museum of the University of Copenhagen. Dansk Botanisk Arkiv 8(2): 1-14, 4 figs, 1 plate.

Børgesen (1932: 2) reported "Several well preserved specimens are present [collected by Forsskål]. "Ad Gamfodae & Mochhae littora." [Al Qunfudhah, Saudi Arabia; Al Mukha, Yemen]
