The type species (holotype) of the genus Hystrichosphaeridium is Hystrichosphaeridium tubiferum (Ehrenberg) Deflandre.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Operculodinium centrocarpum (Deflandre & Cookson) D.Wall.
