The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus tongatensis (Harvey ex Kützing) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.
