Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mesophyllum lamellatum (Setchell & Foslie) W.H.Adey.
Type Information
Type locality: Cypress Point, Monterey County, California.; (Dawson 1960: 19) Lectotype: Setchell & Gibbs (Setchell #3075); 9 January 1899; Attached to a species of Gelidiaceae and a species of Leptophytum; TRH; B17-2554 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 343) Notes: Lectotype designated by Athanasiadis et al. (2004). Paratypes in UC (266384, 737622) and TRH (unnumbered). Athanasiadis et al. (2004) note that the type material was collected in the littoral zone, growing on geniculate coralline fronds (and stones according to Foslie's protologue and annotations in TRH).
