The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Smithora naiadum (C.L.Anderson) Hollenberg.

Type locality: California, USA; Type: on Zosera & Phyllospadix; Notes: Index Nominum Algarum states the type locality is implied to be Farallon Is., but more likely Santa Cruz.
