Type locality: Near Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico; (Dawson 1953: 72) Holotype: Gardner; UC; sheet 294572 (Dawson 1953: 72) Notes: Growing in sublittoral belt (Gardner, 1927: 280).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), cartilaginous, flexible but firm and tough (Stearn 1983).
