The type species (holotype) of the genus Halicystis is Halicystis ovalis (Lyngbye) J.E.Areschoug.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Derbesia osterhoutii (L.R.Blinks & A.C.H.Blinks) J.R.Z.Page.
