The type species (lectotype) of the genus Tolypella is Tolypella nidifica (O.F.Müller) A.Braun.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sphaerochara ramosissima (W.Pérez, J.D.Hall, McCourt & Karol) R.E.Romanov.
