The type species (holotype) of the genus Gymnogongrus is Gymnogongrus griffithsiae (Turner) Martius.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ahnfeltiopsis serenei (E.Y.Dawson) Masuda.

Type locality: Ile de Tre, Nhatrang, Viet Nam; (Dawson 1961: 253) Holotype: Dawson 11268; Feb. 6, 1953; Low ryolie rock known as Roches Noires, off north end of Ile de Tre.; U.S National Herbarium; (Dawson 1961: 253) Notes: Masuda et al. (1994: 177) note that there is an isotype specimen: collected February 6, 1953 by E.Y. Dawson, BISH 499793. Type locality: Hon Tre, Nha Trang, central Vietnam.
