Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mesophyllum alternans (Foslie) Cabioch & M.L.Mendoza.
