Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neorubra decipiens (Montagne) M.S.Calderon, G.H.Boo & S.M.Boo.

Type locality: Payta (Paita), Peru: Gaudichaud; (Montagne 1846: 255) Lectotype: Gaudichaud; PC; 0048760 (MA 2880) (Gabrielson 2008: 106-107) Notes: An earlier lectotypification by I.A. Abbott (viii.1974) was narrowed to the bottom right-hand specimen that matches the Montagne (1845: pl. 145: fig. 1) illustration (see Gabrielson 2008: 106-108).
Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), deceiving (used of a species closely resembling another) (Stearn 1983).
