Type locality: York, England; (Silva & al. 1996: 575) Type: TCD; (Athanasiadis 1996: 198) Notes: According to Womersley (1987: 168), the type (Sphacelaria fusca (Hudson) Gray) is from Sidmouth, England (Griffiths): neotype in TCD.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1983).
