This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Spirodiscus.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ophiocytium parvulum (Perty) A.Braun.

Copeland, H.F. (1954). Spirodiscus Ehrenberg identified as Ophiocytium Nägeli. Science (Washington D C) 119(3090): 388 only, no figs.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), tawny [yellowish-brown] (Stearn 1983).
