The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rhodochorton purpureum (Lightfoot) Rosenvinge.

Type locality: "Upon the base of the Abbott MacKinnon’s tomb in the ruin'd abbey at J-Columb-Kill"; (INA 1996) Type: Probably destroyed (Conway & Knaggs, 1966); Notes: The Abbott MacKinnon’s tomb has now been enclosed and no trace of the original population remains (fide David Fewer).
