Nomenclatural note
"'Ulva glandiformis Gmelin propabiliter'. The authors do not provide the derivation of the epithet and the typography is not definitive; that it probably does not refer to a generic name (e.g., Hydrophora Tode 1791 or Hydrophora Parrot 1836), is inferrable from Ruprecht (Alg. Ochotensis 1840: 91) who, when considering Halosaccion glandiforme and Dumontia hydrophora, wrote "Der Inhalt der Säcke ist entweder Luft, oder Seewasser, oder Sand; so dass hier drei Zustände (aërophora, hydrophora und ammophora) unterschieden werden könnten" [The contents of the sacks are either air, or seawater, or sand; so that here three states (aërophora, hydrophora and ammophora) could be distinguished"]. Kützing, on transferring the species to Halosaccion, indicated by capitalizing the epithet that he considered it a noun in apposition and retained the original spelling. Nevertheless, Postels & Ruprecht seemed to regard the epithet as an adjective.]" [INA]
