Nomenclatural note
Illegitimate: When Gmelin (1768) published Fucus pinastroides, he cited Fucus incurvus as a synonym. Gmelin's name is thus superfluous, illegitimate, and not priorable. Silva, Basson & Moe (1996: 495) therefore treat Sphaerococcus pinnastroides Stackhouse as a new name in accordance with ICN Art. 58.3. However, Sphaerococcus pinastroides Stackhouse is also illegitimate as Stackhouse (1797) mentions Fucus incurvus Hudson as a synonym (Cormaci pers. comm.). - (11 May 2006) - M.D. Guiry
