The type species (lectotype) of the genus Peyssonnelia is Peyssonnelia squamaria (S.G.Gmelin) Decaisne ex J.Agardh.

Taxonomic note
Accodint to Cormaci, Furnari & Alongi (2021: 152) "Ercegovic (1957: 79, figs 24g-i), described and illustrated some damaged thalli (identified at generic level as P. sp. ) dredged between 80 and 100 m depth near the island of Jabuka (Croatia), provided with unicellular rhizoids. Later, Denizot (1968: 97), referred these thalli to as P. inamoena." - (12 August 2021) - M.D. Guiry
