The type species (lectotype) of the genus Sphaerococcus is Sphaerococcus coronopifolius Stackhouse.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium pectinatum (Montagne) Montagne.

Adjective (Latin), pectinate, with narrow close-set divisions like a comb (Stearn 1983).
