Conferva purpurascens Hudson
Type Information
Type locality: Hab in saxis et fucis submarinus passim. Conferva marina nodosa, Coralloidis montani instar ramosa. Dill. musc. 36, t. 7, f. 41; (Hudson 1778: 600) Holotype: OXF; (Dixon & Price 1981: 138) Notes: According to Dixon & Price (1981: 138)Hudson'’s description is based exclusively on the plant described previously by Dillenius (1742: 36) as Conferva marina nodosa..... Harris (1966) came to a similar conclusion, and he considered the Dillenian material to be of neotype status. Although Hudson cited no precise locality in his treatment of Conferva purpurascens, Dillenius (1742: 36) indicates that his material was collected near ‘Lhanfaethly’, Anglesey, which is thus the type locality for the Hudson taxon.
