The type species (holotype) of the genus Ectocarpus is Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kuetzingiella elachistiformis (Heydrich) M.Balakrishnan & Kinkar.
