The type species (lectotype) of the genus Galaxaura is Galaxaura rugosa (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dichotomaria tenera (Kjellman) Huisman, J.T.Harper & G.W.Saunders.
