The type species (lectotype) of the genus Bangia is Bangia atropurpurea (Mertens ex Roth) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Bangiopsis dumontioides (P.Crouan & H.Crouan) V.Krishnmurthy.
