This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum baccularia (Mertens) C.Agardh.

Type locality: not specified ("Ad Novam Hollandiam" ); (Silva & al. 1996: 659) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommmend consulting C. Agardh (1824: 304) for more information on the type locality of this species. According to Tseng & Lu (1992: 17) the type locality is Singapore.
