Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum horneri (Turner) C.Agardh.

Eponomy
Named for "Dr Horner" who was astronomer and collecter aboard the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe (1803-1806), with the ships 'Nadeshda' [or Nadezhda] and 'Neva,' under the command of Capt. Adam von Krusenstern (Wynne 2009).
