The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterosiphonia is Pterosiphonia cloiophylla (C.Agardh) Falkenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Symphyocladiella dendroidea (Montagne) Bustamante, B.Y.Won, S.C.Lindstrom & T.O.Cho.
