Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Tripos is Tripos muelleri Bory.
Status of Name
The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
"The cell body is large, flat dorsoventrally, and leaf-like. The total length is 348 µm. The upper shell is much longer than the lower shell, with the upper shell being 212 µm long, and is pointed leaf-shaped. It is widest about 1/3 above the transverse groove, with the widest part being 112 µm, and it shrinks sharply from the widest part to the top. The top is blunt, and the edges on both sides of the blunt part are not smooth and are serrated. The height of the protrusion is about 16 µm, which is almost the same as the width. The lower shell is short, and the bottom edge is oblique and straight. The length from the transverse groove of the lower shell to the midline of the two bottom corners is 60 µm. The two bottom corners are relatively strong, and the left bottom corner is slightly longer than the right bottom corner, 56 µm and 48 µm respectively. The right bottom corner is straight and extends in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cell. The left bottom corner is thicker than the right bottom corner, and it is slightly curved outward from the bottom line of the lower shell. The transverse groove is straight or slightly inclined to the lower left. The annular hole is small and has an apical hole. This species belongs to the same group as T. cephalotus, T. gravidus and T. praeolongum. They have no apex, are very flat dorsoventrally, and have similar lower shell shapes. The difference lies in the shape of the upper shell. The upper shell of this species is pointed, broadly lanceolate, and blunt at the top. It is named T. apex according to its shape." (Fron the Chinese).
Habitat
"Only one specimen of this species was found, collected in the western Indian Ocean at 2°S, 63°E. It is a tropical oceanic species." (Fron the Chinese).
