Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rugulopteryx radicans (Harvey) De Clerck & Coppejans.

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), rooting, putting forth aerial roots (Stearn 1983).
