The type species (holotype) of the genus Zostera is Zostera marina Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nanozostera noltei (Hornemann) Tomlinson & Posluszny.

Syntype localities: "In mari ad Insul. Röm [Rømø, Denmark], Amrom [Amrum Island, Germany] et Föhr [North Frisian Islands, Germany] et in sinu flenopolitano [Flensburger Föhrde, Germany] invenit Nolte Prof. botanices Kiloniens., vir clarissimus."; (Hornemann 1832: 3)

Eponomy
Named for Ernst Ferdinand Nolte (1791-1875) German botanist and contributor to Flora danica.
