Type Species
This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Dilophus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota gunniana (J.Agardh) I.Hörnig, R.Schnetter & Prud'homme.

Syntype localities: "Hab. ad Novam Hollandiam australem (Curdie, in Hb. Harv.) et Tasmaniam (Hb. R. Gunn.) [southern Australia, Curdie; Tasmania, Gunn]; (Agardh 1882: 107) Notes: Womersley (1967: 212): "Type Locality. South Australia (Curdie). Type.-Herb. Agardh, LD (No. 49540)." but does not use the word lectotype.

Eponomy
Named for Ronald Campbell Gunn (1808 - 1881), the collector.
