The type species (holotype) of the genus Ectocarpus is Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ectocarpus siliculosus var. pygmaeus (J.E.Areschoug) Gallardo.
