Type locality: "Hab. in Fuco chondrophyllo ad oras Australia?." [Port Phillip Heads, Victoria, Australia]; (Agardh 1882: 13) Holotype: LD; herb. alg. Agardh 45972 (Womersley 1987: 80) Notes: Womersley (1987) notes that there is an isotype in NSW. Type locality: Port Phillip Heads, Vic. (Harvey, Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 101).

Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1983).
