The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium minusculum (Weber Bosse) R.E.Norris.

Lectotype locality: Daram Inlet, east coast of Misoöl Island, Indonesia; (Silva & al. 1996: 139) Type: Siboga Exp. Station 165; (Boo et al. 2016: table 1) Notes: This type locality was first described by Hatta & Prud’homme van Reine (1991: 366) (Silva et al., 1996)
