Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Callophyllis rangiferina (R.Brown ex Turner) Womersley.

Type Information
Type locality: At Kent's Islands, near New Holland. Mr. Brown. [Tasmania]; (Turner 1809-1811: 116) Holotype: R. Brown (no. 256) tetrasporangial; 1803-4; BM; (Womersley 1973: 256) Notes: According to Womersley (1994: 258) the type is from Georgetown, Tasmania and the holotype (Gunn 1279) is in TCD. These data seem to apply to Sphaerococcus australis Harvey 1844, the basionym of Callophyllis coccinea (Harvey in Hooker & Harvey) Kützing.
