Taxonomic note
The taxonomic position of this entity is entirely uncertain (Furnari et al., 1999; Wynne 2014: 139). The presence of a single, parietal, plate-like plastid does not permit its inclusion in either Myriogramme or Nitophyllum. "This species was described by Mazza (1903: 107) on material sent to him by Rodríguez, collected at 65 m depth near the Port of Mahon (Menorca Island, the Balearic Islands, Spain) and corresponding to that collected by Mazza himself as cast ashore in the Port of Messina (Italy). Boudouresque in Boudouresque et al. (1984: 49) proposed to transfer the species to the genus Myriogramme as M. tristromatica (Rodríguez ex Mazza) Boudouresque. However, such a proposal was not followed because not taxonomically supported. It should be noted that Nitophyllum tristromaticum is considered incertae sedis because, as noted by both Ercegovi%u0107 (1957: 119) and Furnari et al. (1999: 119), reproductive organs are unknown. Athanasiadis (2016: 1148) listed it among incertae sedis of Delesseriaceae. Finally, it's noteworthy that the only record of fertile thalli (with tetrasporangia and cystocarps) of that species is that from the Gulf of Naples (Italy) by Funk (1927: 408). However, such reproductive organs were not described and the above record was considered as doubtful by Funk himself (Funk (1955: 105)." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 495). - (11 May 2006) - M.D. Guiry
