The type species (lectotype) of the genus Oscillatoria is Oscillatoria princeps Vaucher ex Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kamptonema laetevirens (H.M.Crouan & P.L.Crouan ex Gomont) Strunecký, Komárek & J.Smarda.
