Nomenclatural note
Hypnea esperi Bory (1828: 157) was superfluous, and thus illegitimate, when published (Silva, Meñez & Moe, 1987: 50), being a substitute name for Fucus nootkanus Esper (1802: 30, pl. 125). If it is recognised at the species level, it requires a new name. At the varietal level, the name Hypnea musciformis var. esperi was legitimately applied by J. Agardh (1851: 442) as he expressly excluded Fucus nootkanus. Silva, Basson & Moe (1996, p. 298) further described the difficulties attaching to the name Hypnea esperi. South & Skelton (2003) and South (2004) cite “Hypnea esperi Grunow 1867 (intended synonym: H. musciformis (Wulfen) Lamouroux var. esperi J. Agardh 1851).” - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic note
The entity known generally in warm seas as Hypnea esperi Bory has been referred to Hypnea anastomosans Papenfuss, Lipkin & Silva, q.v. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
