Nomenclatural notes
C.Agardh specifically used in 1812 the epithet "hofman-bangii" which is nomenclaturally distinct from the substitute name "Hofmanni" [sic] proposed by C.Agardh in 1817 when he described the genus, and by later authors. However, unless the later starting point for this group is altered, Scytonema hofmanii as validated by Bornet & Flahault (1886: 97) is the earliest correct name. If the later starting point is abandoned, the earliest available correct name would be Scytonema hofman-bangii [sic] C.Agardh, 1812. - (20 January 2014) - M.D. Guiry
