Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ptilophora pectinata (A.Gepp & E.S.Gepp) R.E.Norris.

Type locality: Richards Bay, Natal, South Africa; (Silva & al. 1996: 131)
